    Plaquenil sulfa drug

I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil without any problems. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had.

Hydroxychloroquine sulfate Plaquenil is not a sulfa drug. That is a misconception. However, hydroxychloroquine can be associated with serious dermatological side effects including severe rashes. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets is indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus, in patients who have not responded satisfactorily to drugs with less potential for serious side effects. I can't take sulfa drugs so I haven't researched Azulfidene as much as the others, but it seems to be somewhat less commonly used in this community than Plaquenil and Methotrexate. I was started on Plaquenil two months ago and have had zero side effects beyond the very first dose.

My reaction to sulfa consisted of wheezing, but no major distress, and Plaquenil was sufficiently different from Gantrisin that my doctor felt comfortable with prescribing it. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions.

Does anyone know how likely it is for hydroxychloroquine to cause hair loss? Weight loss is also listed as a side effect, I am up 15 Linda 8 mo into this drug👀😤😃😁Everyone is different. I’m not ill enough to of interest to him generally! I couldn't 100 % say it is due to the mets though but my hair has gone thinner since I started taking the meds. However, Hydroxychloroquine slows down and mitigates lupus symptomatology so it will slow up hair loss. The only real side effect is on vision in those susceptible to that; annual testing for a couple of years is advisable and if that is OK you can forget visual deterioration more or less.
