Can i take tums with plaquenil

It says on the bottle I can’t take an antacid for at least four hours after taking the Plaquenil. I hate heart burn:( I take a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) essentially antacid in the morning that is supposed to last all day. I would ask your pharmacist first and see if it matters whether it is just a 'tums' or medication strength. I think if it keeps happening I’ll go talk to my pharmacist to see what they recommend. Has anyone else experienced heartburn while taking Plaquenil and if so what did you do to avoid or ease the heartburn? If they are not able to give you an answer your Family Dr or Rheumatoid will know. Fortunately the heartburn goes away after a few hours, but those few hours are very uncomfortable!

Feb 24, 2008 The reason for not taking antacids for an hour or so either side of taking Plaquenil is that they reduce absorption I think it's the same for other meds not just Plaquenil. And of course for herbals, supplements and even foodstuffs in some cases like grapefruit juice. Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it. Take this medicine with meals or milk to lessen stomach upset, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Aug 26, 2017 You can avoid this problem with the following steps Don't take calcium supplements or antacids at the same time you take thyroid hormone replacement. Take any products containing calcium at least four hours before or after taking thyroid hormone replacement.

But that's just the optimum way to take it, not the necessity. Sometimes what is suggested (no antacid for 4 hours) is not necessarily required if it means you can't or don't want to take your plaquenil anymore. the antacid will affect the absorption of the plaquenil and the amount your body can absorb.

  5. An interesting thing is that antacids like Tums can interact with acid reducers making the acid reducer less effective. So don't take anything for granted when looking up interactions, and look up all your over the counter OTC medications, as well. If you think this requires changes in timing or dosage.

Plaquenil is VERY hard on the stomach. I take mine with prescription antacids to protect my stomach. As far as I know the advice is to make sure that antacids and Plaquenil are taken at least 4 hours apart. If they are taken together - effectiveness decreases but 4 hours apart is OK. Take care - Scottie For those of you who take calcium tablets, I saw on there is a facility to check drug interactionsthat taking Plaquenil at the same time with calcium could reduce the efficacy of Plaquenil by up to 50%. To get around that, it is best to leave 4 hours between taking either of them.
