Association of diabetes as a growing and costly disease with cancer is a major health concern. Presence of diabetes related comorbidities, poorer response to cancer treatment, and excess mortality related to diabetes are among the most important explanations. Although diabetes appear to be a risk factor for cancer and is associated with the mortality risk in cancer patients, several factors such as diabetes duration, multiple drug therapy, and the presence of diabetes comorbidities make the assessment of the effect of diabetes treatment on cancer risk and mortality difficult. Metformin is the drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The available evidence from basic science, clinical, and population-based research supports the anticancer effect of metformin. However, randomized controlled clinical trials do not provide enough evidence for a strong protective effect of metformin on cancer incidence or mortality. Let me first say, I don’t hate Metformin for women with PCOS. For some women it really does help spur ovulation, control blood sugar and help with some weight management but….it’s not without its share of issues. And it’s definitely not the magic bullet for weight loss – although it’s usually presented that way. Metformin is typically given with meals throughout the day, or more commonly now the extended release version is given once with dinner or at bedtime. While only having to pop a pill one time per day is always appealing, this once a day dosing (especially at bedtime) is where I see the most problems with my patients. It lowers both fasting and post meal glucose levels by decreasing the glucose absorption in your intestines after a meal; as well as decreasing the amount of glucose your liver makes for later use. It also does help improve insulin sensitivity by increasing glucose movement into a cell. Not so fast, here are the most common issues I see in women using Metformin: Metformin is notorious for causing sometimes severe digestive issues including stomach pain or upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and even a sense of body weakness or metallic taste in the mouth in some.

Actually, metformin is usually not the original cause of kidney problems. However, metformin is eliminated by the kidneys and when a patient has poor. If your doctor has prescribed Metformin for diabetes or another use, what exactly is this medication and how does it work? What is the best way to take it to reduce side effects? What adverse effects might you experience and why is it important to be aware of these? According to the American Diabetes Association Standards of Care, Metformin, if tolerated, is the preferred initial oral diabetes medication for Type 2 diabetes because it is the most effective. Unlike people with Type 1 diabetes, people with Type 2 diabetes make . The problem is that they are either not making enough insulin or the insulin they do make isn't being used efficiently. Metformin is a weight neutral medication that helps the body use insulin. There is a “black box” warning associated with Metformin. The concern is “Lactic Acidosis” which is a complication that can occur from taking Metformin, which increases due to renal or hepatic impairment, acute congestive heart failure, sepsis, dehydration or excess alcohol intake. Metformin is an oral antidiabetic drug whose classification is that of a biguanide. It is often the drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, particularly among patients who are overweight and who’ve got normal kidney functionality. Metformin is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome and has been researched into for other diseases where insulin resistance is often a critical factor. Metformin actively works by suppressing glucose production in the liver. Metformin has been shown to be the only antidiabetic drug that’s conclusively shown to prevent cardiovascular complications from diabetes.

Hello all, I learned something very valuable this week that I wanted to share in case someone else is in this situation. I'm 47, married, with 4 kids, and I occasionally (once or twice a year) get an e-coli UTI. Like most of you, I know what they feel like, can tell when I have one, and they're horrible so I immediately go to the doctor to get treatment. Went to my family doctor, did the in-office dipstick test, tested positive for leukocytes & blood. So they did, and the "best" antibiotic for my e-coli infection was listed as Levaquin. I agreed to go on it, even though I've heard scary things about that family of antibiotics. I was desperate, the pain was awful.10 days on Levaquin, and it took until day #9 before I felt like the symptoms were mostly gone. Finished up the 10 day course, and within 2 days, symptoms were back with a vengeance. So my doctor said I "must not really have an infection." Well, I know what a UTI feels like, and I was VERY certain that it was not gone. So my family doctor gave me a much higher dose of Levaquin for 5 more days. I badgered doctor into letting me try Macrobid for 7 days, because I truly felt the Levaquin wasn't working for me for some reason.
